Full-time residence warden, Kings Bournemouth

Location: Bournemouth

Reporting to: Residential Accommodation Manager


The Residence Warden position is live-in with room and board provided (location of meals may vary).

Reporting to the Residential Accommodation Manager, the Residence Warden role involves promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students living at the residences, student meet and greets, implementing residence rules and procedures, taking part in activities with the students, weekly checks and day-to-day running of the residences.

Emergency on call during working days and holiday/sick cover for the department.

Flexibility to move between residences for cover as and when required.

Person specification:

Energy, empathy and flexibility are essential, along with a good work ethic and proven reliability. You will be personable and approachable, with an authoritative yet friendly manner. The ability to work as part of a team whilst being capable of using initiative is required, with a willingness to organise and participate in extracurricular activities with the residence students. Satisfactory enhanced DBS check, references and employment history are required.

Essential skills/experience:

  • Similar live-in experience
  • Experience of working with young adults in a supervisory role
  • The ability to command attention and respect from young adults and more mature students
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Efficient organisational & admin skills
  • Willingness to travel between residences
  • Strong IT skills including competence with Microsoft Office and Internet research
  • Will be required to use Kings Class & iSAMS databases (training will be provided)
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly and cope in stressful situations
  • English native-speaker competence/Level of English equivalent to CEF Level C2

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • Previous residential live-in role experience
  • Experience of working with international students
  • A First Aid or Health & Safety qualification
  • Safeguarding training
  • Knowledge of local area
  • Additional language(s)
  • Own car

Reporting to: Principal, Kings Bournemouth


The Bursar is a key member of the college administration team.  Responsible to the Principal, the Bursar has full day-to-day control of the accounts of the college.

The Bursar works closely with the Principal and directors of Kings Colleges on all aspects of budgeting and financial management, providing expertise and advice to help with financial decision making.  The Bursar also works with the Registrar and with the bursars of the other colleges to coordinate credit control across the group.   

The Bursar also works closely with the Director of Administration and Group Finance Director.


These are the Bursar's main areas of activity (though it is understood the list is not exhaustive and is likely to change over time with the development of the college: 

  • To line manage the assistant bursar
  • To protect at all times the confidentiality of information handled within the role
  • To oversee and mange the Sales Ledger
  • To manage Purchase and Nominal ledgers
  • To deal with Credit control
  • To handle cash sales, credit card transactions, etc when required
  • To carry out Bank reconciliation
  • To control Cash management
  • To do Staff payroll
  • To deal with PAYE returns and VAT returns
  • To liaise with bank, HMRC and auditors as required
  • To prepare budgets and cash flow forecasts
  • To produce monthly management accounts
  • To interpret accounts to produce reports and analyses as required
  • To liaise with departmental heads over payroll and budgets
  • To deal with suppliers and contractors as required
  • To maintain insurance policies
  • To prepare and files own correspondence
  • To answer calls and helps out in college office as required

Qualifications and attributes

The post calls for accounting skills at all levels and familiarity with the kind of software packages used for accounts, cash management and payroll functions. Training is given as required in specific packages.

Suitable applicants are likely to 

  • have accountancy experience in a commercial or professional setting
  • be used to working to deadlines in payroll and management account reporting
  • be ready to take on responsibilities beyond the purely financial

The Bursar has frequent contact with students and other members of staff and is routinely involved in a range of issues that are not strictly financial. This calls for an ability to deal easily and calmly with all manner of people from many different parts of the world and for an adaptable and cooperative attitude to working as part of a team.

Suitable applicants are likely to

  • be at ease in a lively, youthful, international environment
  • have the inter-personal skills and judgement to manage people effectively in this context
  • be comfortable in a post which calls for multi-tasking while also having the discipline to able to focus on deadlines when required

Recruitment details

The post is permanent and full time.  Working hours are usually between 08:30 and 17:30 though the nature of the post is such that the holder may need to work outside office hours from time to time. 

Holiday entitlement is 28 days per year including bank holidays. Note that holidays may not normally be taken in the busy period between late June and mid-August.

Salary is offered in the range £20,000 to £23,000 per annum.
